Early Childhood Development
As a general rule, little effort is made on the behalf of the Nepali government or the private sector to address early childhood nurture and development.
Recently, however, the government has encouraged the setting up of Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD) in rural communities , but often does not provide the required facilities and teachers: the teachers are not trained at the centers, which generally lack child-friendly classrooms and resources.
VIN therefore aims to render the ECDs safe and child-friendly environments, to train ECD teachers to make their classes joyful and creative for children, to supply resources for the centres and to encourage teachers to collect locally available resources.
VIN has also set up a Child Development Centre (ECD) at Panchmane Community, Jitpur, Kathmandu, in partnership with the District Education Office. We have 20 children, aged between 4-6 who have been benefiting from the program. The Centre still needs to be equipped with child friendly furniture and the materials for the children need to become more extensive, but progress is already being made.
